What is your ethical sourcing policy?
It is our policy to treat all our suppliers fairly. It is also our policy to ensure that our suppliers have high social and ethical standards. In Ontario and Quebec, we buy the bulk of our produce directly from our network of producers. We are in close contact with these producers, support them in many ways and visit their farms to ensure they meet our standards. This enables us to feel very confident about their social and ethical standards.
Can you specify each week where the contents of my box comes from?
We often purchase the same item from several growers in a particular week. It enables us to take smaller harvests and to give you a more reliable supply. We may also bring in supplies from different growers at the last minute, dependant on the weather, crop problems or increased demand from customers. For this reason, it's difficult for us to always give full details of where each item in your box comes from, as they may vary from day to day and box to box.
What is produce ‘in conversion’?
Converting to organic farming methods takes a minimum of three years, and all of our farmers have gone through the conversion process. During the conversion, produce is farmed organically over three years, at the end of which the farm gets its organic certificate. The difficult part of conversion for our growers is that organic farming methods mean increased costs and lower yields, but during conversion their produce has to be sold as conventional produce, competing with farmers who are using pesticides and artificial fertilisers. We believe offering in conversion produce is a great way of helping farmers convert to organic, while bringing more Ontario farmland under organic standards. We understand that you may not want to receive any produce in conversion. We will clearly inform you if a produce is in conversion, so you always have the option of excluding it from your box.
